Elementary Program
The elementary program at NYSSD
services deaf children between the ages of three and thirteen. The classrooms are small,
usually around six students, and staffed by a teacher of the deaf and an instructor
assistant. The program follows detailed curricula developed from
the New York State Standards and Assessments. Each students' program is based on an
Individual Educational Program (IEP).
The Elemenatry Program also includes
physical education, art, library and CAPA (our creative and performing arts program). All
of our students receive speech and language therapy as part of their curriculum. In
addition, our program offers occupational therapy and physical therapy, as well as
individual personal counseling. This extensive programming has established NYSSD as a
complete academic, social/behavioral and physical program designed to maximize each
childs learning.
Additionally, our students’ opportunities to grow
academically and socially in a warm environment with their peers is enhanced
by our school-wide computer network with terminals in each classroom and the
dormitory, our TV production studio, field trips, integrated programs with
public schools, community library program, science fair programs, and
theatrical performances. For further information please contact the
Elementary Department Head at 315-337-8400, Ext. 8445.
