In addition to LEAs appointing surrogate parents for students with disabilities who need them, including those students who are unaccompanied homeless youth, a judge responsible for overseeing the care of a child may appoint a surrogate parent.
IDEA has set a 30 calendar day timeline for the appointment of a surrogate parent.
