The program will also include H.S. and undergraduate recruitment activities as well as focused activities to provide incentives for graduates to work in public education. |

1. NYSED will develop a consortium of universities in Central and Western
New York to develop and implement strategies to increase the number of
candidates admitted to graduate programs in speech-language pathology. Responsibility: VESID will provide funds to implement the Speech-Language Pathology Upstate Consortium. (Fred DeMay/Peter Byron) Time frame: Initiate funding process, July, 2004. |

2. NYSED will communicate with licensed speech-language pathologists
advising them of the existing alternate pathway to certification for
licensed speech-language pathologists and financial incentives available at
NYCDOE. Responsibility: Offices of Higher Education, VESID (Leslie Templeman/Robert Bentley) Time frame: Mid-July, 2004. Letter drafted that will be an insert to ongoing registrations and re-registrations. Legal authority will be sought to enable sharing the names and addresses electronically. NYCDOE documents will be added upon receipt and the mailing will be sent to reach the largest number of potential candidates. |

August 25, 2004 Update: Scholarship program materials were received from NYCDOE and distributed by OHE and VESID by email to training programs and technical assistance providers (Exhibit 4). The topic of financial incentives was discussed at the July NYSED/NYCDOE meeting. A subsequent discussion was held by telephone to discuss providing credit for clinical experience. Recommendations were reviewed by NYCDOE and received on August 13, 2004 (Exhibit 7). |

February 17, 2005 Update: NYCDOE/DHR is emphasizing the service commitment in our scholarship programs for speech providers (as well as all other scholarship programs). NYCDOE/DHR is utilizing outside resources such as the Teachers Support Network to attract additional candidates for scholarship programs who understand and agree to the service commitment. Please note that NYCDOE/DHR is concerned that scholarship candidates must agree to and fulfill their service commitments and is emphasizing this aspect of the program to colleges and universities. |
