Percent of School-Age Students with Disabilities (Ages 6-21) by Types of Educational Settings

  • The percentage of school-age students with disabilities provided special education services in general education programs for 80 percent or more of the school-day has increased from 42.8 percent in 1996-97 to 53.4 percent in 2003-04. New York State surpasses the 2003-04 national average of 49.9 percent by 3.5 percentage points.
  • The percentage of students with disabilities placed in separate settings has decreased from 10.2 percent in 1996-97 to 7.3 percent in 2003-04, however, New York placed significantly greater percentages of students with disabilities in separate settings compared to the 2003-04 national average of 3.9 percent.
