Appendix 17a: Percent of School-Age Students with Disabilities (Ages 6-21) by Types of Educational Settings

  • The percentage of school-age students with disabilities provided special education services in general education programs for 80 percent or more of the school-day has increased from 42.8 percent in 1996-97 to 51.8 percent in 2002-03. New York State surpassed the 2002-03 national average of 48.2 percent in 2000-01.
  • The percentage of students with disabilities placed in separate settings has decreased from 10.2 percent in 1996-97 to 7.4 percent in 2002-03, however, New York placed significantly greater percentages of students with disabilities in separate settings compared to the 2002-03 national average of 4.0 percent.
