Classification Rates for School-Age Students with Disabilities in New York State

The Statewide classification rate in 2002-2003 increased to 12.0 percent from 11.8 percent in 2001-2002. The State revised its methodology for computing the total enrollment and this may have caused the rate increase. Previously, BEDS files were used for enrollment, however additional students were added to the enrollment from special education data files. Over the last several years, BEDS enrollment data collection has been enhanced, thus avoiding most of the need to enhance the total enrollment with data from special education files.
