TANISHA … Journey to a Dream Job “No Child’s Play
Occupation: Teacher Assistant
One of VESID’s most successful collaborations has been with local
school systems throughout the State. Young eligible high school students
are informed about VESID and many follow-up by applying for services
while they are still in high school. Tanisha applied to VESID during
her senior year at Brooklyn Comprehensive Night High School, in September
2005. Upon completion of her high school, VESID sponsored Tanisha’s
training at Caliber Training Institute. Over the course of the following
year, Tanisha became certified to be both a childcare provider and a
health care provider.
In October 2006, after receiving guidance, counseling, and training, Tanisha began to work at the Hanson Place Day Care Center. Tanisha enjoyed her work in there. She was able to enhance her understanding of children’s developmental needs and strengthen her skills as a childcare worker. In the spring of 2007, she decided to spread her wings and try private childcare work.
Tanisha enjoyed the family with whom she worked, but realized she required the structure and professional development that comes from working in a day care center. She returned to VESID in July 2007 and was fast tracked to the Job Placement Unit. VESID sponsored her with an independent job developer who provided her with valuable coaching and mentoring in interviewing, work readiness behavior and decision-making. In accordance with the job developer responsibilities, many Brooklyn day care centers were contacted and Tanisha went on multiple interviews.
Five Block Day Care Center hired Tanisha. She loves her work there and has already been promoted to Assistant Teacher. Tanisha has grown both professionally and personally throughout this process. The VESID Brooklyn office is very happy to have helped Tanisha achieve her employment goal.
