Joan… A Mother to be Proud of

Occupation: Cafeteria Aide

joanmotherJoan is a single mother raising her 2 boys. Joan stated that she wanted a job,so that her boys would be proud of her.

After training and placement by the Association for the Help of Retarded Children (AHRC), Joan  is now a dedicated part-time employee at this Community Rehabilitation program, and has been in this position since September 2006. Joan has an important position as a Cafeteria Aide. The need of the aging population of AHRC’s makes Joan's responsibilities crucial. She is responsible for monitoring the cafeteria during lunch and breaks to ensure the safety of all the participants. Joan oversees the compliance of specific eating guidelines for AHRC’s individuals. She monitors the cafeteria for behavioral issues and choking hazards and reports them to administration. She has also been appointed to provide training for all new staff in the cafeteria due to her complete understanding of her position.

Joan was nominated by her peers and received AHRC’s “You Make a Difference Award”.  This award is for extemporary service in doing an outstanding job. She was also nominated for New York State Rehabilitation Association’s Direct Support Professional Award.
